In our first two weeks of this year\u2019s Clean Speech Colorado campaign, we worked on developing a shalom personality and how to use it to maintain a peaceful demeanor even around difficult people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what if we<\/em> are the problem and not the other person? That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to talk about now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever heard of that game called, \u201cWho Am I\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s played like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone takes a card with the name of a famous person on it. Without looking at what\u2019s written on the card, you tape the card to your forehead with the name facing outward so everyone can read it \u2014 except you. You walk around the room trying to figure out who \u201cyou\u201d are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Card games aside, isn\u2019t that just like life? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a room full of people, each one of us has our unique personality which everyone else sees \u2014 though we ourselves might not recognize it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This<\/em> person is the jokester, and that <\/em>person gives friendly advice. This<\/em> person makes tactless remarks, and that<\/em> person has to smooth them over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the question you try to answer for yourself is\u2026 who am I?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you make everyone else in the room feel more comfortable and at ease… or the opposite?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When dealing with difficult people, the first step is to determine who<\/em> is the difficult person in this situation. Because maybe it\u2019s you<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe, just maybe, without intending to be difficult or argumentative, you<\/em> are causing the problem, instigating the argument, and eliciting the heated response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very often \u2014 without realizing it \u2014 we trigger other people\u2019s negative reaction to us and then we<\/em> get upset with them<\/em> for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When someone you\u2019re speaking with, especially a good friend or family member, suddenly becomes \u201cdifficult,\u201d stop and think, \u201cDid I<\/em> do or say something to provoke them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try this today: If someone around you seems to be acting irrationally, before getting into an argument with them, stop and think if <\/strong>you<\/em><\/strong> might have been the cause.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
